853 does seem fairly impervious to rust though bare patches on mine still clean, yet the 4130 rear end has light surface rust where scraped. If you're asking the

As the others pointed out it means thinner
Mar 09, 2009 · Not all chromoly steel is specifically 4130, but you see it pretty often. I have a friend who is an aircraft engineer, and he says 4130 steel is usually used in aircraft when steel is needed. It's incredibly strong, and relatively lightweight. Reynolds 531 is a proprietary steel alloy of Reynolds, and it is manganese molybdemum, I believe. Frame Materials and What to Buy - BikeRoarMay 16, 2013 · 4130 Chromoly is the material of choice for the majority of better quality steel frames on the market today. It is actually an alloy of iron and chromium (and other stuff) and is corrosion resistant, durable and only slightly heavier than aluminium. Reynolds make a range of chromoly tubing that is probably the best out there at the moment. I
May 17, 2009 · Its largely the same stuff. Steel tubing with added metals to make alloys. 501 is closest to 4130. 531 is a diffenernt formula. I think Reynolds add a metal (or some element) which actually "air hardens" the tubing when welded, where as straight 4130 softens and weakens under very hot (welding) tempratures. Reynolds 831, 725, 631, 531 Whats the difference Reynolds 853 This seamless air-hardening steel tube sets new standards for professional cycle frames and proves that steel still has a future at the highest levels.
853 is the highest grade normal steel Reynolds makes. There is also a thinner 853 Pro Team tubeset, and also the stainless 953. Kaisei (Keirin-tastic), Columbus and Dedaciaii are the other ones you'll see. A lot of the Italian builders are going with carbon tails on steel bikes because it's easy and cheap to do. eg Reynolds 853 vs. 725 Mountain Bike Reviews ForumOct 09, 2007 · For example, 6061 aluminum weighs 0.098 pounds per cubic inch. 4130 steel weighs 0.283 lb./in3, and 3/2.5 titanium is 0.160 lb./in3. This is an important and easy relationship to remember:ium is about half the density of steel, aluminum is about one-third the density of steel. Reynolds 853 seemed to be everywhere 5 years ago, but most
Sep 29, 2009 · STEEL The steel tubing used by bicycle frame manufacturers typically falls into one of three basic categories:microalloy; heat treated cromoly; or standard 4130. Steel STEEL ALLOYS:GREAT RIDE, GREAT PRICE All steels have the same inherent stiffness and weight, regardless of strength - Reynolds superb 853 is no stiffer than 1010 (mild steel). Adding a tiny bit of chromium and Molybendum make it strong enough to butt or thinned down in the middle, thus lighter. What's the difference between a Reynolds 520 steel bicycle Feb 26, 2016 · Reynolds 631 is the same material as Reynolds 853- as it cools from the heat of joining it becomes harder and stronger- the tubes are butted but 631 is heavier gauge. All Reynolds products reflect state-of-the-art engineering and premium quality. 4130 chrome moly and so-called "cromoly" (without the number designation) are totally different
Dec 29, 2007 · I've got a double butted 4130 chromoly frame and a Reynolds 853 frame. Both are tig welded. I've also had a Columbus Thron fillet brazed steel frame that is sort of comparable to the 520 but closer to 531 steel from memory. The 4130 frame is probably the stiffest of the 3.
